Pyongyang, June 5 (KCNA) -- This year the Ragwon County Offshore Farm is under construction in the DPRK after the successful completion of the Sinpho City Offshore Farm, a new model base of advanced offshore farming, in the Phungo-dong area in the city of Sinpho, South Hamgyong Province, last year.
Aquaculture in the country is a sphere of resources development whose profitability and prospective nature capable of attaining greater profits with less investment have already been proved, Associate Professor Ri Il Gwang, director of the Maritime Research Institute under the Global Environment Science Faculty of Kim Il Sung University, said, and went on:
As the East Sea of Korea has favorable conditions for the aquaculture in terms of quality, depth and temperature of water, large culture grounds can be built in the sea near the land and their productivity increased while saving manpower. Less material needed for establishing aquaculture facilities is consumed as the depth of water in the waters off aquaculture grounds is shallow. The security of the facilities is guaranteed and their management is favorable as the waves are lower than the ones in the deep sea.
The Sinpho City Offshore Farm has a favorable condition of not suffering damage from high wave, tidal wave, etc. as there is a big islet playing a role of natural breakwater near the farm. The place where the Ragwon County Offshore Farm is under construction is free from unfavorable marine meteorological effects as it is enclosed by land on its three sides, and it is the most suitable site for building the farm as it is favorable for building a wharf and breakwater and nears aquaculture ground.
Aquatic animals and plants, including abalone, trepang and sea urchin, have been naturally multiplying in the sea off Ragwon County from long ago as its seawater is clear and free from pollution sources.
There are many conditions for protecting aquaculture facilities in the west coast of Korea such as the sea off Ongjin County favorable for building aquaculture grounds as the seawater has good physical and biological self-purification action and no any resource of inflowing contaminated materials.
The photosynthesis of seaweeds is active and productivity is high in the waters near the East Sea of Korea as light shines even to the seabed. There are many the nutrition and salt sources, as waters of rivers and streams flow in the west coast of Korea, and the biodiversity in the intertidal zone is abundant owing to high and low tides.
The respected Comrade Kim Jong Un attended the groundbreaking ceremony of the Ragwon County Offshore Farm in February and indicated the orientation and ways for the coastal cities and counties to effectively exploit and utilize marine resources on the basis of a scientific study and analysis of the natural and geographical conditions and marine ecological environment. -0-
